General Info

Site Type: Church

Historical Significance:

The Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church was organized in 1867 by the renown black preacher, Reverend John Jasper. Originally housed in a confederate horse stable, Sixth Mount Zion found a home at 14 West Duval Street in 1869. John Jasper reached the height of his fame in 1878 when he unveiled his "Sun Do Move" sermon which was preached over 250 times upon request. Slated for destruction in 1956, Sixth Mount Zion survived being destroyed when I-95 was constructed. Known nationally for its preservation program, the church is on the National Register of Historic Places, The Virginia Landmarks Register, and possesses a VA. Highway Historic Marker.

Physical Description:

The current church building was construced in 1887 by the African-American builder, Mr. George Boyd. In 1924 the building was remodelled by Charles T. Russell, a noted African-American architect. Sixth Mount Zion is one of the largest African-American church sanctuaries in Richmond. The church houses the John Jasper Memorial Room & Museum which displays its large collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts. Many of these artifacts are on display in museums across the country.
